How Much Do Movers Cost in Boston in 2026? Hourly Rates, Minimums and Travel Fees

By Tom Alten, Owner
Boston movers bill by the hour for a crew and a truck, with a minimum number of hours and a travel fee on top. At Prime Moving, the 2026 hourly rate runs from $149 for two movers and a truck to $209 for four, with a 3-hour minimum. Boston’s curb permits, narrow streets and the September 1 lease crunch change what the final bill looks like.
How much do movers cost in Boston?
Prime Moving’s Boston rates are $149 an hour for 2 movers and a truck, $179 for 3 movers and $209 for 4 movers (cash), with a 3-hour minimum and a one-time travel fee that varies by distance. That is the whole formula: crew rate times hours, plus travel.
For context, a 2025 national survey of 1,000 moving customers by This Old House Reviews found the average local residential move in the United States cost $1,489, versus $3,129 for long-distance relocations. A national average hides a lot. A studio in the South End and a four-bedroom in Charlestown will land far apart, because hours drive the bill.
Hourly rates (cash) for a crew and a truck, before the one-time travel fee and the 3-hour minimum.
A bigger crew costs more per hour but usually finishes sooner. For a one-bedroom, two movers is often enough. For a full apartment or house, a third or fourth mover can shorten the day, so the hourly rate is only half the picture.
What does the hourly rate include?
Prime Moving’s Boston hourly rate includes moving pads, assembly and reassembly of furniture, basic insurance, dollies and hand-trucks with tools, and packing and unpacking. Those items are not billed as separate line items, which makes quotes easier to compare.
The three crew sizes are set up as packages:
- 2 Movers & A Truck ($149): professional, stress-free moving.
- 3 Movers & A Truck ($179): the economy package, plus partial packing and crating.
- 4 Movers & A Truck ($209): the plus package, plus complete packing and labeling.
If you need more hands or more vehicles, Prime’s listed extras are $40 for an additional mover and $50 for an additional truck. If you want help with boxes, see how packing and unpacking works before you pick a crew size, since packing hours count toward the clock.
How does the 3-hour minimum work?
Prime Moving’s Boston minimum is 3 hours, so even a small job is billed as at least three hours of crew time. A short move costs the same as a three-hour one.
This is standard in Massachusetts. Household goods tariffs filed with the state’s Department of Public Utilities show local movers routinely enforcing a 2- to 3-hour minimum, with additional work billed in 15-minute increments, as in a tariff on file with Mass.gov. Ask any mover how they bill time after the minimum, and whether they round up or down.
Tip: If your move is small, group everything into one trip. Pack and stage items by the door so the clock runs on carrying, not searching for tape.
How does the travel fee work?
Prime Moving charges a one-time travel fee that varies by distance, so ask for the exact amount for your two addresses when you request a quote. It is a single charge for the job, not an hourly add-on.
Other movers calculate this differently. Intrastate tariffs approved by the Massachusetts DPU commonly bill travel time to and from the customer, a flat 30 minutes for moves within 15 miles and one full hour beyond 15 miles, as one Mass.gov tariff shows. That is a general benchmark, not Prime’s fee. The point is that travel is a real line item, so a quote that leaves it out is incomplete.
Prime serves Boston, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Charlestown, Downtown Boston, Fenway-Kenmore, the North End, the Seaport District and the South End. If you live in one of these neighborhoods, the Back Bay movers page and the other area pages explain what access looks like there.
What other Boston costs should you plan for?
The biggest add-on is usually truck parking: the City of Boston charges $69 for a one-day permit on unmetered streets and $109 in metered zones in 2026. That permit reserves two parking spaces, about 40 feet, for the truck.
The City of Boston permit portal lists the $69 flat rate for two non-metered spaces between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and the $109 rate for two metered spaces. Timing matters too. The Boston Transportation Department asks for online applications at least 14 days ahead, and in-person applications at City Hall at least 3 business days before the move, per the city’s moving guidance. Check the current rules before you apply, since requirements and fees can change.
The permit prices and time limits that sit alongside your mover’s hourly rate.
One more local quirk affects the route, not the price directly. Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive have 10-foot clearance limits, and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation prohibits commercial vehicles there. A route that avoids them can add driving time, so tell your mover your route concerns early.
Watch out: A permit does not replace a plan. If the truck has nowhere legal to stop, crew time goes to carrying items farther. Reserve the space before moving day.
When are Boston movers most expensive?
Late August and the first days of September are the most expensive and hardest to book, because about 70 percent of Boston residential leases turn over on September 1. That is the finding the City of Boston’s Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics reports, which it links to citywide spikes in truck demand and peak pricing, in its coordinated furniture pick pilot.
The permit numbers show how concentrated it is. In August 2026, the Boston Transportation Department issued over 3,000 moving truck permits, with more than 2,500 for the late-August crunch alone, according to the City of Boston. If your lease allows it, moving mid-month or outside late summer gives you more choice of dates and times.
Searches for this very question follow the same rhythm: they rise in late spring and summer and fall back in autumn.
Interest in moving costs rises in late spring and summer, and drops by September.

What does moving protection cost and cover?
Massachusetts DPU rules require licensed movers to offer basic released value protection at no extra cost, reimbursing lost or damaged goods at $0.60 per pound per article. That is a weight-based rate, not a replacement-value one.
The DPU tariff on file describes the basic protection this way. It matters for heavy items that are worth a lot, such as a TV or a lamp, where weight and value do not match. Prime’s Boston rate lists basic insurance as included. Ask what it covers and whether you can add more protection for high-value items.
How do you estimate your own Boston move?
Estimate in four parts: crew rate times expected hours (at least 3), a travel fee, any truck parking permit, and extras such as another mover. Writing each part down keeps quotes comparable.
- Pick a crew size, from $149 to $209 an hour at Prime.
- Estimate hours for loading, driving and unloading, and remember the 3-hour minimum.
- Ask for the one-time travel fee for your two addresses.
- Add the City of Boston permit if the truck needs curb space.
- Add extras, such as $40 for another mover or $50 for another truck.
Our pricing page lists current packages. If you are moving out of state, long-distance moving is priced differently from a local job.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to move from New York City to Boston?
There is no single figure, because it depends on volume and distance. The 2025 This Old House Reviews survey put the average long-distance move in the United States at $3,129, against $1,489 for a local move. For a real number on your move, ask for a written quote based on your inventory and both addresses.
What are red flags with movers?
Watch for quotes with no stated hourly minimum, no mention of travel fees, or no explanation of what protection covers. Standard Massachusetts tariffs show a 2- to 3-hour minimum and travel time charges, so a mover who skips these may be leaving costs for later. Ask for everything in writing before moving day.
How much does it cost to park a moving truck in Boston?
The City of Boston charges $69 for a one-day permit on unmetered streets and $109 for metered spaces in 2026. Online applications need to be in at least 14 days ahead. Check current city rules before applying.
Why is there a 3-hour minimum?
Crews and trucks are committed for the whole window, and travel to and from the job is part of the effort. Massachusetts tariffs commonly set minimums of 2 to 3 hours, and Prime Moving’s Boston minimum is 3 hours.
If you want a price for your own move, ask Prime Moving LLC for a quote with your addresses, crew size and move date, and we will walk you through the hourly rate, the 3-hour minimum and the travel fee.
